On compensation, how do big box, non-tech companies like Ford, Walgreens, Under Armour, etc compare to tech startups on salary and title? Ie, do you get leveled up or down coming from a late stage startup or well known tech company? #tech #salarycomparison #salaries #ford
Pay scales are noticeably lower at these companies so on one hand you will get up leveled to make your tc more competitive, but on the other hand they will look down on your comparatively low yoe vs the lifers there with 20+ Yoe so you’ll get down leveled for that. In all likelihood neither side will be able to find common ground. It also depends on the company. Some feel more acutely that their lack of technical talent is a problem so these companies will make more of an effort to come up with competitive offers. However, pay can only go so high before you outstrip the directors and vps at the company, which is a hard cap. Many are ok with just outsourcing their developers instead

I am starting to think Chinese interviewers currently fail non-Chinese candidates on purpose.
I worked with Under Armour's key competitor and it's titles are inflated af. Director of Product was doing PM job (I was one of them). Salaries were also lesser, I'd say comparable to a SPM in a tech company. One of the main reasons I left was because of low caliber, probably the lowest skilled folks I've ever seen (e.g. A director of experimentation couldn't tell you what a confidence interval was). Most skilled jobs were outsourced to contract staff. But, almost everyone was super nice. People got promoted every 2-3 years just by sticking around and being good drinking buddies. They don't fire easily, are very conscious of sustainability, mental health and non discriminarion. If you're looking for a more relaxed life, then worth joining. And yes, apply for at least 1 (maybe even 2) levels up if you are!
Great reply!
