Non paid relocation, salary $69000, worth it?

Asked for in person interview for a data analyst position at the bay area and I'm out of state. They can't pay for relocation since it's non-profit and the salary is expected to be around $69,000. Is it worth it for me to fly down for the interview? Note: I dont know how much is enough to live in the bay area that's why I'm asking.

No.

From KP to non profit should be a no go . Do you want to come to Bay Area , is that why you are aiming low ?

I am trying to see opportunities in CA, but it's a little hard to gauge what's the norm/acceptable salary there since cost of living is higher there than where I'm at.

That salary would be rough to live on in the bay. If you're fine grinding for a while and trying to hop to a better opportunity later it might be worth it for you. Depends on your career goals.

I am trying to make a transition as an analyst because my current job is more or less data maintenance/administrative.

Yeah just look at rent costs for a 1 bedroom in SF - you’ll be lucky to find anything under 3500/month. You can find as low as 2500/month for a 400sqft studio but even then it’s usually worse areas. You’d need a roommate and be comfortable with minimal savings. Not a lot of incentive if you plan on staying at that position

Cost of living is high but this is an exaggeration. My close friend lives in a 2 bedroom apartment for 3200 in the sunset district.

Worth it for the free trip and interview experience if it's on their dime. Would probably not take the offer unless you don't mind living in poverty.

Oh wow that just put a lot into perspective, thanks!

Isn't there KP office u can transfer to in CA?

Kaiser Permanente imkay OP Jul 30, 2019

Yeah ideally I want to, but I'm not getting those interviews because it looks like I'm not as qualified as other candidates.

What's the role? I consulted in the DEC for a year and may have some contacts or info.

What's the reasonable minimum salary to be on the safe side to live in the bay area then?

Oracle tpnqmglg Jul 30, 2019

I’d say 90k entry level.

BYTON cJKu57 Jul 30, 2019

That would be hard to say. Do people survive on minimum pay? Sure they do. There are minimum pay workers every where. Would you like to live that standard? I’m guessing not. If you are only coming here so you can find better opportunities, do you have a back up if things don’t work out? So yes. It’s possible to survive on 69K. What should be a reasonable salary that depends on the market value of your talent. What should be reasonable for you to decide to move here? Depends on what kind of life style u r used to or want (higher or lower than current for better future jobs or not u decide) Sorry not a direct answer. But I think you can find that on cost of living websites by playing with numbers based on what u r willing to sacrifice and what’s an expense absolutely necessary for you. Did that make sense?

Where in the Bay Area? You can have roommates, there's lots of listings around for young professionals.

Kaiser Permanente imkay OP Jul 30, 2019

The recruiter who contacted me told the location is at San Leandro

looking at the tax and apartments ($1.3k to $2.4k a month) not worth it. I wonder if you can negotiate it?

No. California can be a bit pricey

If it’s not $100k+, don’t even bother. I’m honestly not sure why companies are not fleeing the Bay Area en masse, considering that they need to pay probably 2x more than elsewhere for the same work.
