Hi, Just joined Google in SVL(Bay) 3.5 weeks back. I dont think I am right fit for my current team at all. Team just started 2 months back and all are people with experience in Goolgle. Expectations from me are very high and I have no time to ramp up at all. Technically I dont see an issue but I have to pull weekends to just try and keep up the pace. Also there is lot of.product ambiguity and different folks having different opinions on the product itself and that adds risks to whatever I am doing. There is no concept of defined requirements at all. I just feel like I will be Pip'd here. My manager is so engrossed that he cannot see the pressure he is putting. Can't connect or communicate with him in 1:1s as well. Our frequencies just dont match. My Wlb is gone for toss. Can I reach out to managers whom I met in team match. I know one ads team is pretty stable and might have better path over there. I dont know what to do. Feeling extremely frustrated and low. Also since i Joine last week of May can I get NI in Sept perf or I will get Noogler pass ? Joined as T4 SWE. TC 310k In Sunnyvale campus.Joined from Amazon still using the same account.
I thought wlb there would be much better than Amazon’s?
310 at T4 is high. Guess it’s the price you pay.
What does TC have to do with this thread? Why even mention it?
You will get a Noogler pass, but usually you're not allowed to leave a team earlier than 12mo unless your manager approves it.
Is 12 mo hard cut off or more of a guideline?
It's the cut at which point you can literally tell your manager to go f themselves and go to the next team. Before that is still possible if your manager agrees with it. I've had a report who wasn't happy with the projects we had available for him and I agreed to let him transfer before 1 year. That's why being open and l explicit with your manager about this issue is important, they will either improve your situation or help you move to something else.
Have you explicitly raised those concerns to your manager? I'm a manager and believe me, it's really hard to board nooglers. We need to put a lot of effort into making sure nooglers have challenging projects to work on and many times it's hard to figure out the right balance between challenging people and not overloading them. It's ok to bring that up and let them know the balance is not good for you and they'll adapt. Also, working solely with experienced Googlers is a bless, take advantage of it. You're in a pretty good position to make mistakes and learn a lot from them, use that resource aggressively. One day you'll spend a chunk of your time helping nooglers to ramp up and you'll miss what you have now.
Can I PM you in blind. Need your opinions before talking to my manager.
OP: Can you update on your experiences? Did you end up going for a team change? Or did you progress well with the same team? Were you able to come out of your frustrations with the original team?
Sounds like imposter syndrome. Will get better with time.
Yep. OP you’re not alone. It can be a bumpy ride in many teams for the first 8 months or so.
