Now I’m feeling shitty

Jun 27, 2019 56 Comments

Been in IT for quite a bit of time and working in the same company for over a decade. Always known as a high performer - grew through ranks and now is at a director level role. Salary and bonus is close to 300k. Always thought this is good pay and along with other benefits, it’s almost one of the best. Age around 45 and net worth around 5mn. Thought it was all good. Until I saw the posts here today. WTF? I now feel like I’m cheated. Why the fuck did I not join Apple in 2005 when their recruiter begged me? Why didn’t I join Google when their senior leader asked me if I wanted to just talk to their recruiter (during a collaboration with Google back in 2007). I always thought the total comp between my company and these were on the same levels. and why did I shirk off when our CFO went to join FB as CFO and his direct report was my business counterpart who asked me if I’m interested? Every time I stayed back because I thought getting a promotion every couple of years was the measure of success in corporate america. Fuck! My ignorance was a bliss.

You're the sort of person who would be upset for receiving $1,000,000 because you found out your friends received $2,000,000 smh.

Cut the guy some slack. Its natural. Most ppl on Blind feel it at one point or the other and it forces them to take action for the better. You can either make Blind a catalyst for change or just whine about others having better company/TC

I agree. But that’s also the reason why I got myself from relatively limited means in my childhood to where I’m. As I said in my post, I’m competitive and I don’t see it as a problem yet.

@pxel agreed about taking action. Been around the block long enough to know that there are always opportunities in the future just as many as there were in the past. It’s just that I kind of forgot/ignored/got complacent to look around for better opportunities. I take this as a wake up call.

I’m a competitive guy. I watched my back and ran as fast as I could to avoid being left with the crowds. I have a fairly frugal lifestyle so having more money or making more money wouldn’t have changed my lifestyle but would’ve validated my ego more than anything. So I wouldn’t say it’s all pure greed (may be there’s a part of it but definitely not the significant part of it).

How? I have always been in the top ten percentage of performers. I mean hindsight is 20:20 and nobody would’ve expected the insane growth of comp in the past five years but otherwise, these companies still would’ve been just as competitive. I think the stock comp made a humongous difference. When I joined, Apple sales were the same as my company’s and adjusted to today, Apple is at least six or seven times over.

This is kinda pathetic. You were happy with your job and salary... until you found out what other people earn? Your happiness (or lack there of) is directly related to other people. You should work on that before working on your very respectable TC.

You know how many life threatening diseases Genentech has treated? You were part of helping so many people who live now. The recombinant DNA technology is one of a kind and had helped millions of people live a life. Try to open your eyes and see the bigger picture. The scientists who invent those drugs are making half of what you make and content because they know what is a "job satisfaction" is.

What do you expect? Did you not do your own research on market rate on salaries? They change. Did you also not know to grow your TC, moving from company to company for growth and better experience is the best way? You were at one company for over a decade. 300k TC isn't bad either so be happy with what you have.

The problem is, I did do some level of research but most of the time it was at salary plus bonus level. And from that perspective, the current company seemed to be in the same ballpark so the inertia took over I guess

You were also very general in what you do. IT has many extremes in salary. You cannot compare a IT Director vs a Eng Director or senior engineer salary/TC etc. Depends on location, company etc also. You are doing well for yourself. Not alot of ppl get to your TC even though Blind seems to make you think otherwise.

lol, maybe you should have become a stocker broker. Bank multi million per year in bonuses. Oh, how about becoming a start up founder getting hundreds of millions when you sell. Why have your goals stop at what you see on Blind?
