So I dropped out of college with a semester to finish. Have 10 YOE. Worked at both FAANG and startups. Currently at Netflix as an EM and I'm currently going through the interview loop (applying only for EM or senior EM Roles). Most of my prior job switches has been referrals or through people I worked with

My resume has my college name with no graduation date. None of the recruiters seem to ask if I got a degree. Should I remove it from the resume altogether? Will a company cancel an offer if they find out during a background check?

I am by no means trying to tell any of the places I'm applying that I got a degree. Just not sure if not having one, takes me out of consideration at certain companies?

With 10 yoe and Netflix experience, I think you can leave education off your resume completely without affecting your prospects. And if someone asks, just own it 100% and tell the truth. It’s very unlikely it’ll be held against you in my opinion and if it is, would you really want to work there?

  • If I saw a resume with a college and no graduation year, I would think either “recent graduate, little experience” or “old person and trying to hide it.” Based on your 10yoe, I’m going to think the latter. Most resumes just show college, degree, and year. Maybe you could leave the degree off or your university is especially prestigious.

If you have employment dates on your resume, that's enough information to determine your age , right? Got assume that most people finish undergrad at 21 and then take their first job immediately

Sure, you can approximate it, but with 10yoe most people don't put all of their jobs on the CV.

I'm baffled that an EM at Netflix would have to ask this question. Have you not participated in dozens of interview loops? What would you think if a candidate represented their education the way you did? Would you hire an experienced candidate who omitted their education?

I would! Most of my hires at FB were effectively were mostly either self taught or drop out folks. At Netflix, we don't even list a degree as a requirement (most JDs are actively discouraged from listing this). I have always believed that if you can pass the interview loop and are smart, it doesn't matter if you have a CS degree.

But I know there are companies that don't believe that and do require a degree for certain roles.

Op take college off your resume.

It could be construed as deceptive, and it's not doing anything beneficial for you.
