Hi, I wanted to see what people think about working on cleared projects versus giving up the clearance and working in the private sector.

What do you think, is there enough interesting work in the govt. to allow someone to grow as an SWE? I know companies pay well but the private sector obviously pays very well. I just want to make sure I am informed before giving up a clearance that took a year to get.

I was hired as a SWE but have been working as a *nix admin. I enjoy working on with infrastructure but want to be primarily developing and growing as a SWE. I am not concerned about job security and enjoy things that move quickly.

I hear MS and AMZ pay premiums for cleared people. I think it’s mainly TS and all the other fancy names added to it. Might check them out.

Being a solutions architect sounds interesting! It’s something I would like to do but I feel like it would be down the line when I have much more experience. Do you think it is possibly for a Solutions Architect to grow in terms of technical contributions?

  • Explore the private sector. I’m currently interviewing outside of the government contractor area. In my current position I am considered a level 3 but in the private section I am evaluated as a level 1.
I would take a minor paycut but I cannot imagine having to take a paycut from being a 6 and only being evaluated as a 1 or 2.
