Nursing

I have been a nurse for 3 years. something that is so irrataing is when my CNA’s complain about their job and how “hard” it is. yes we work the same hours but they toke a 2 week course and i went to school for 6 years getting my BSN to actually take care of my patients and do way more than take vital signs and empty bed pans. the medical field isnt for everyone and if u cant keep up taking 12 patients vitals signs, you shouldnt be doing it. not to mention that i have the same patients but my responsibilities involve keeping them alive! #nurses #nursing

This is an awful attitude and as a fellow nurse I’m ashamed that other people may think that we all feel like this. Those CNA’s are your eyes and ears. They spend way more time with the patients. They know the patients way better than you do, they connect with them more, they can notice subtle changes that you might not see (because yeah! You’re busy too!) Nursing is chronically short staffed and you’re probably running around trying to keep everyone alive just like they are trying to keep people from being incontinent, cleaning up people who are - they are the ones turning patients, putting barrier cream on and powdering folds, protecting patients skin for the patients health and so YOU don’t have to do an incident report about a bed sore. They are bathing patients, making sure they don’t fall, feeding patients, getting blood sugars, changing sheets, answering call bells because the patients food is cold, or they are out of ice, constantly getting interrupted while doing their job. Work as a CNA for a week and then see how you feel. Want to know why your vitals aren’t done? Bed 6 needed a whole bed change, at the same time, bed 3 was setting off the bed alarm and tangled in their IV tubing, bed 7 keeps asking why the tv isn’t working, bed 3 needed a blood sugar check because their meal came earlier than planned, bed 8 just wants company and keeps calling out... put yourself in their shoes. I’ve been a nurse for over 6 years, I have my masters, and when I worked at the bedside, those CNA’s were my saviors. I couldn’t do my job without them and when I had to, because sometimes that happens, my days sucked because they do the bulk of the work. So what they don’t have the critical thinking skills you have? They work their asses off and do way more of the physical work than you do, they most likely have way more patients than you, and they are short staffed too. Want them to respect you? Help them. Work side by side. Be a team player. Get your own vitals if you need them RIGHT NOW. Just because you went to school longer and have a degree doesn’t mean that you automatically work harder than they do or are better than them. Their job is tough for not a lot of pay and they deserve all the respect in the world. Please adjust your attitude for the sake of the patients, your coworkers, the nursing profession, and the future of your own career.

Agree with Fresenius. I am a DNP, have worked in hospital leadership, informatics, open heart recovery, and primary care in hospital and ambulatory settings. All of those have been hard in their own ways. Nurses don’t get to judge the definition of hard for others. You get paid a lot more for that education and work. CNAs, LPNs, therapists, doctors, pharmacists...it takes a team to keep patients alive. Respect what each role brings to the patient. Your CNA is right. His/her job IS hard. And if they do their job well, yours is a little easier. Seems like partnering may make both of your jobs better.

I think both of RNs and CNA does great job taking care patient. I do respect both profession job. It's not easy either of this job. You guys serving people in their worst conditions. These both functions are very important for well being of patients. My parents has been admitted numbers of times. I treated them with respect. Thanks for you both services.
