How are you calculating TC?

I've seen huge differences on how people are calculating, or rather claiming their accurate total compensation numbers. So I figured I'd come ask my fellow Blinders. What is the most common way to report TC?

For example:

Base: 120k
Equity: 60k (TOTAL GRANT - not the amount vested per year)
Bonus: 20k

Some people would say that their TC is 120+60+20 = 200k.

But in reality, they're only making 120+15+20 = 155k per year

  • I don’t think anyone adds their whole grant as TC

Some of the numbers on levels.fyi vary wildly for the same position, same location. I would hope they wouldn't, because it just seems super inflated

I think most people use the 155k figure in your scenario.what I'm wondering is if they account for stock increase as part of their TC.

What I want to know is what the TC was on the day of their offer. Not after 5 years in a bull market or bear market

@linkedin that's fair, I think we should be asking about ote instead of TC then. Tc isn't helpful for understanding what you should be negotiating for at the offer stage

    • People are not asking TC or GTFO to understand how to negotiate. They are doing it as a dick measuring contest. Therefore, they are using the correct metric.

  • Those people are wrong. 100% delusional. Same as the people who count unvested RSUs as part of their net worth. Wanna-bes.

  • I do (base * 4 + total grant + sign on + expected bonus for on target perf for 4 years)/4

For me it’s really confusing. I have about 40k shares of thredup which I have exercised at 2.05 per share. Right now the stock price is about 7.51 a share. Would I count that as my total compensation or would I count the stocks that are being vested as my total compensation? My iso stock options? Right now I am vesting 300 shares of iso stocks per month until September 2022.

My base salary is 190k and my rsus grant is 6k per year, so my total compensation without iso stock options would be 196k per year. But is that really true?
