I met with an executive recruiter today... they primarily place senior level management and c suite folks around the PNW. I mentioned I was interested in taking a look at Microsoft. She indicated working there is OK, but anything longer than 3-4 years and you become "tainted". I asked her what she meant, and she indicated that other companies don't like to hire managers from Microsoft because the skill sets that allow you to do well at Microsoft tend not to translate well outside of Microsoft. She said they have seen a very high rate of failure of senior MS people when placed outside of the company.

What are people's thoughts on this? Should I be looking elsewhere? Does a long tenure at MS on your resume "Taint" you?

It's bullshit, I was at MS for awhile (more than 4 years) and doing fine at Amazon and had plenty of opportunity at other similar companies. She has some unknown bias.

  • It's true. You need to be a sociopath to succeed at MSFT. I'm out of here in 3 months (making it a 3-years run)

I think it really depends on team to team. However I do agree with her that it is very hard for ex microsoft employees to get gigs elsewhere. I know for a fact because I was once a microsoft employee and I also have friends who have faced the same uphill battle. As you get more senior it gets even harder to land roles elsewhere. Shit is tough but hey what can I say. MSFT is a different beast on its own.
