I've been told that as a senior-ish CS engineer, I'm earning more than every other SWE and PM at the company in TC, even the very senior SWEs. In part, it's due to the MBO-based variable comp that these non-customer-facing roles don't have. That seems very surprising. Is that true in most companies?

I’d be surprised if that were even true in your situation.

May come off as surprising but at some places the customer facing side do get compensated differently. i.e No cap or a higher cap on bonuses compared to the core dev side. Sometimes this comes with a lower base (as compared to SWEs) but in good years, the CSEs can come out quite ahead net-net.
