Is Samsung in trouble?

Oct 10, 2016 18 Comments

Does anybody else think this could be the end for Samsung? Or at least their gain in the phone business?

Bunch of their phones (Galaxy Note) explode. They react late to recalls. One of the replacement phones apparently catches fire. All the telecom companies are issuing exchanges, AT&T is threatening to just ban them all together.

I genuinely thought they shipped great products, especially lately. Can anybody comment? I remember seeing some Samsung folks before?

According to a CreditSuisse report, Samsung will lose at least 5% of 2016 revenue because of the Note 7 issues.
It is expected to also lose significant market share in some geographies.
However, it is a large and diverse conglomerate and this will not break it, although recovery will be very painful

People don't forget. They do remember e.g. Apple iPhone 6+ bending.

But battery exploding is on another level of failure for Samsung. They really need to do the recall right and change policies/ procedures/ put in checks and balances to vow this never happens again and be transparent with a post mortem.

Similar to Intel with Pentium 90 FDIV bug. People didn't forget and they still buy Core processors today.

  • it's not at all end for Samsung phones even though their phone explode recently. There are a lot of apple haters out there and samsung is the only strong choice they have.

Remember some of the iPhone also exploded and were bent in the pocket but no one remembers that anymore.

Yes, it might be a set back for them but it will not blow them away.
