Messy startup decision

Feb 18 4 Comments

Friend of my friend is one of co-founders of startup that got series B evaluation of 1B.
They have huge funding but based on what this guy told me things are not great organization wise (not well defined goals and roadmap, even the whole project is confusing as they are making teams for everything just seeing what is going to stick or attract more money etc.).
Anyway, one of my career goals is to get to lead project and people and in Microsoft right now I just dont get that and will not get it for couple of next years most likley (we are just too small team with really high average level).
This startup is offering me all those career development things right away as well as TC increase of 40% (not counting their stocks which might be worth a lot).
Is it worth making this move? I kind of believe this company would sink but at the same time I will get experiance I seek.

Current TC: 95k (Europe)

Have you worked at a startup before? Even with a huge series B there's still a lot of finding the ideal product market fit, maturing the infrastructure to handle growth, and generally having too little manpower to tackle everything they want to tackle. It's a good time to come in for a leadership position because you'll influence the core technology and the various processes involved in the companies software development life cycle.

Stick around long enough to vest your options and see what decisions you made either paid off or failed, and you'll learn about the various bumps in the road you'll face taking things to scale. It's a good feedback loop for you.

    • No, I worked in Microsoft even before I finished university. Have no other company experience so I am turning to Blind to hear about it :)
      Thanks for this answer!
