Applied to Google 5 months ago. They want to interview me now, but I already accepted another offer. What should I do?

So my Google new grad application was put on the back-burner for 5 months and they finally gotten around to it.

The issue is I already accepted another offer 4 months ago and I'm not sure if it's still worth going through the trouble of prepping/leetcoding again. I heard Google tend to low-ball people nowadays anyways.

Current offer (accepted) Microsoft Redmond:
110k + 150k/3.5 years stock + 55k signing bonus. It's a stable team with high visibility and an interesting tech stack. I also have a good relationship with the manager, skip and cvp, and don't want to burn the bridge.

Google L3 concerns:
- TC ?? I have a feeling it will be less than my current offer with better refresher
- host matching. I'm graduating in May this year. I have a feeling all the good teams are not hiring anymore (?)

What should I do?

  • Third option I forgot to add to the poll:
"Go to Interview without prep and enjoy free trip to Cali" lol

    • Good point. If I straight up decline the interview, would this also reflect badly next time I'll apply?

No. Just tell them what you've told here. Google responded way too late and you already have decided on your first job with a team you like. You're willing to reconnect later on.

I think your chance of getting a good career is much higher in Microsoft than Google. In Google, once you get to L5, it becomes really hard to go up any further. I think you might as well enjoy Microsoft for a few years at least, work hard, and build a strong foundation for your career.

IMHO: The projects in Google are not as good as the work in Microsoft.

It just depends on how much work you think the interview is going to cost you. If you need to spend a TON of time prepping or you find prepping for interviews stressful or going to interviews, then just skip it, you have a good job with a good package. Personally I'd stay put. Google is vastly overrated right now unless you really "need" to say "Hey, look at me, I work at Google doing nonsense, but it's Google and I'm a Googler so I'm so much better than you".

Practice. Plus luck favours only proactive people. You never know who you meet on the interview. Perhaps it will be someone who will pull you into another venture in future.

At Google they have L4 and L5 people sweeping floors. Skip interview and enjoy life. It is never a good idea to compete for the most coveted job on Earth because the pay and the challenge can suck they literally have 1.3 million applicants per year and so they can offer them s*** positions and people will say Yes! YES!

I like your analogy on sweeping floors. Google is such a weird company that L3-L5s basically do the same work (at least in my org). This is not the case in other companies I have worked for before.
