Alright folks. There are a lot of smart people on here. I’m fascinated by how this space is evolving and I want to understand:
— Can Azure and GCP catch up to AWS?
— Where / how will they beat AWS?
Some trends I’m noticing:
— AWS going up the stack to application layer
— Google ML tools gaining acceptance - could be a wedge
I’m not an expert on this area. But I did build a startup on top of AWS. When we started 5 years ago there really wasn’t an alternative.

I think the biggest factor is Amazon competitors using Azure. I hear that from my friends working in retail. Although Google cloud may be more stable with superior infra, it has a long way to go to catch up with the rich features sets by AWS and Azure. Companies who want to leave AWS will naturally choose Microsoft whereas startups may choose Google cloud over Azure.
But all of this will take time and therefore no contenders in near future. Certainly not Azure. No 2 should have some innovations to have a chance but it has been playing catch up for the past five years and have not narrowed gap much. Satya has not grown up on a business friendly developed country. I expect him to be good with cost cutting but not innovation or even taking no 1 crown. Same for any foreign national heavy countries like Adobe, eBay, Qualcomm, Intel. Google and Amazon have significantly less and have a ton of Americans who are leading the cutting edge tech. Kubernetes is a great example what Google can do but not Azure.
