I’m a SWE in the UK with about 8 YOE, working exclusively in finance roles. I’ve mainly been using Python in this time with a little Java in the last year or so.

I’ve been thinking about a move to a tech company, but looking at roles at Google they all seem to list Java/experience developing apps as a requisite, where my experience is definitely lacking! Am I out of luck until I get more experience, or are there roles where they don’t care too much? I’m ok with a bit of a down level (I’d somewhat expect it crossing ‘domains’ anyway)

Nobody cares. Just do leetcode well. Your actual language experience is moot

  • Don’t worry. It’s probably an advantage. Google use of Java is so opinionated and limited to Google’s approved set of standards and libraries, you wouldn’t like it if you had a lot of professional Java experience
