During the virtual onsite with FB, I couldn't completely finish one of the problems. Can I send recruiter a link the completed version of it (to send it to their interviewer)? I just needed a little touch and polish to make it perfect). Problem was involved writing html, css & js. No one could have finished it in 45mins but I'm sure they were looking for my logic and approach. But, I just perfectly solved it now - want to see if I should send them.

  • I don't think this would make much of a difference. Interviewer should only base his/hers feedback from the original interview.

I’ve only had one candidate out of about 100 try sending me extra work after the allocated interview time.

The interview is 1 hour for everyone. I found it very dishonest that this candidate tried to do this.

Recruiter probably won’t forward your code to the interviewer, panel, or managers. They know they need to maintain the integrity of the process.

How does that make them or the action *dishonest* though? Unless there’s some other subtext, I just don’t see it.

Agree it shouldn’t be considered (or even read as you state), but I really don’t understand the jump to dishonestly specifically.

Because they’re trying to gain an advantage over the other candidates, outside the interview process, potentially with only them and me knowing. Worst case scenario if I were to include their extra work and neglect to mention how I got it in the feedback, I’d be colluding with them.

I will say the ill intent is not necessarily there. The candidate may only be thinking about a desire to show what they’ve got. As an interviewer, I still don’t want to get extra work outside the interview, just to keep things fair.

Either way, not really worth discussing too much imo. Dishonest or not, I imagine the end result is usually the same: the extra work doesn’t get considered.

For assembly line interviews (e.g., the average FAANG SWE interview where you get asked LC questions), there’s zero benefit to doing this. For more intimate interview with a small team or company, then I would.

  • I feel weird and never respond when I get thank you emails. I was tempted when I was a new grad but now I know it can’t help it can only hurt.

    • I’m an eng interviewer. It feels weird because it’s very rare and the candidates that sent thank you emails usually did poorly. Feels like they’re trying to sway my opinion. I won’t think worse of them, but certainly not better. I’ve never had a great candidate send a thank you email. Thank you to the recruiter makes way more sense. I do that all the time but then again they usually follow up.

This will make you look extremely weak and childish. The statement you make is “I am so sure my performance on this interview is below the bar, please reject me”. Sending work after the fact shows you know your performer poorly, no need for the interviewers to judge you. Have some confidence, even if you failed have confidence in your failure to move one. Why play these childish games?
