This is a question to the people who were employed in the '99-2000s. Was the tech job market as hot then as what it is today where employers are apparently throwing 400k+ to SDE2 with 2-3YOE at Amazon, for example? I think these posts are fake news, but the market is seriously hot right now. Too hot. Should we be worried?

The current market is a result of literally trillions of dollars being flooded into growth companies (mostly tech) and the subsequent inflation pushing salaries up. This is why you see crazy high salaries.

Also, as a tech worker whose RSUs have almost 3xd, there’s no way I’m getting poached unless the new company hits me with a big offer. Companies know this so they have to offer more.

  • 400k house back then worth 2M+ now if you look at history on Redfin (bay area), so current TC is not too crazy.

The time to worry is not when the market is hot. The time to worry is when the flaming hot market is built on a house of cards.

  • The 99 bubble was different. Nobody gave RSU's yet, it was all stock options. So salaries weren't inflated, but hitting the right startup made you rich. Nobody wanted to work for the big tech companies because the stock options were worthless without stock growth and the big tech stocks were not growing much. It was all about trying to join a hot dotcom startup.
