Whats it like to work at a dinasaur company?

I've always wondered what its like to work at a dinasaur zombie company like Intel, IBM

I think I would like to join them when I'm 55. I've heard from my friends who worked at Intel that they were able to pull off a 10 hour/week and leetcode during work time. Yes its unbelievable how chill these companies can be.

I would like to get some first hand experiences.

  • IBM Global Services: None of the managers on your client team understand technology. Barely any of the clients do.

You spend 60-70hr/week trying to deliver unrealistic projects because the execs are Sales-oriented. They have no repercussions if they sell undeliverable work.

If you’re on a dev team, you spend a lot of time arguing about the scope of the work and getting the bare minimum of work done.

If you’re on an ops team, you will have 1 or 2 people in a team of ~10-25 that are capable of doing the work. Everyone else is a butt in a seat that is required to meet the contractual requirements. I remember dozens of incidents where teammates - being billed at hundred of $/day - brought down Prod because they couldn’t follow a basic SOP to restart a service or deploy a new release.

    • Watson is a marketing brand more than a product line. Literally over the space of a weekend I saw whole teams being rebranded to “Watson”, despite them doing nothing relating to AI.

      Financial engineering at it’s finest.

While reading the post of tech_. I thought he was writing about Accenture :). These type of incompetent teams are there at many companies. All these companies live on contract work.

I have friends who are overworked at Intel and weighed down by IBM politics.

Does intel cheat on taxes like other faang etc? And exploit outside countries for precious minerals metals ( apple recently started copying intel on that )... and many more things... btw many companies outside are successful because of intel folks that moved there ( even before faang winds that started recently)

The bureaucracy is a never-ending battle that really tears you down, design maturity is low in lots of areas, and there are a lot of people resistant to change who stonewall and block efforts to progress. Pushing a boulder up a mountain at all times and burning out often. It’s not easy breezy if you care. But, there are also pockets of really awesome, hard working, talented people. I love most of my immediate teammates. IBM also impressively gives lots of opportunities to people from non traditional backgrounds - no college degree, switching careers entirely. And, the diverse age groups is refreshing. It’s hard though. Not sure I’d recommend.
