Reason to cover up going under a lower salary

Jun 6, 2020 12 Comments

Real reason is I want better work life balance and is ok with lesser salary#engineering

I get good salary now, but can't take the pressure and work load. I am an SDE3 in Microsoft but considering to go at a lower level so that expectations and stress reduce

It doesn’t work like that. If you are experienced and keep doing well, expectation will go back to high pretty quickly.

  • Are you looking for a lower band within Microsoft? Or trying to convince an HR of a different company? The later will be easier

Unfortunately lower hiring level doesn’t guarantee you a better wlb. You can join a higher paying job, even have level bump and have a stress free work, the opposite is also true - so many horror stories about sde1/2 at Amzn.

I would recommend to try internal transfer first. Otherwise do not focus on a paycut, it may disappoint you even more when you find that a new team is stressful as well.

Also which FANG r u currently?

OP, look for teams/orgs within MS that are known for better WLB. Same with other companies, apply to companies that are known for good WLB. Also, it sounds like you're burned out, sometimes just moving to a new team/company can renew your interest in the work and make work more enjoyable.
