Update: went with Nvidia. :)
Can’t thank y’all for your inputs.

MSFT’s offer is final. Nvidia has a small room for negotiation in terms of sign-on.
The deadline is tonight for MSFT.

Role: Hardware Engineer. (Design Verification Engineer)
Yoe: 2

Microsoft: Hillsboro, OR.
Base: 131k
RSUs: 200k/4
Sign on: 70k
Bonus: 0-20%. Performance-based.
Stock refreshers: 0-32k over 5 years. Performance-based.

Nvidia: Bay Area
Base: 175k
RSUs: 240k/4
Sign on: 35k (Asked for at least 50-55. Recruiter said 40 might be possible)
Bonus: no separate bonus. Just a bigger base. Nvidia policy.
Stock refreshers: no idea. Can someone comment on this?

I am in Bay Area right now. I will have to relocate for MSFT.
Me: I like coding and want to code and debug. And not just debug or infrastructure work.

Work:
MSFT’s project is interesting as it is just being brought up from ground zero. So much to code and learn around. Not sure what project it is. It was kept a secret.
Nvidia’s team is nice. People are sweet (So are MSFT people). Not sure about the work a lot. Have a call with the manager today. But it also has a lot of coding, which I like again.

Can you, the people of Blind, please share your comments? I need your help more than ever!!

Current TC: 150k. Bay Area. 2 yoe.

You are too young to move to Oregon. It’ll be very boring

How much is the commute from Portland? I don't think there is anything as intersting as Portland that's close to Santa Clara. Weather part is true though but some people like the rain.

Looks like 30 minutes. So yeah nothing in 30 minutes from Santa Clara is as good as Portland.

If you are MS+2yoe, the base for NVIDIA is too good to be true. The stock is at lower end so it’s a good time to join.

  • Either way you are helping me, as I work at MSFT and have stock in NVIDIA. I'd say go with NVIDIA so you get the higher base. It's hard to adjust base again unless you move companies or threaten to in raise negotiations (and can actually back up the threats with offers). And while both companies are growing, I believe NVIDIA will grow faster as it's AI platform becomes even more mature.

Thanks for that insight. I am definitely inclined towards Nvidia. I asked to match the sign-on, and they said no, and that's final. So, I asked to move the RSUs instead. That's in talks right now. I do not have any issue with MSFT as well, except for the location. Had they given me the Bay Area position, I would have suffered to decide.

    • Yeah, one thing I forgot to mention, but which someone else brought up, is to make sure your do a Cost of Living calculation with an official COL calculator from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) before you make your final decision. I don't know what Hillsboro is like but towns in Oregon can range from very expensive and posh or very cheap and rural. Which you like is a personal preference.

Go for MSFT if you like learning. Projects are amazing and you can wear multiple hats if you like to lead. There is much scope to make an impact across various hardware teams. You are not married to one specific area and can move around. With being that said, if money is a goal, go for NVIDIA. Their stock refreshers easily beat MSFT.

SES is hardware design division (Silicon engineering solutions) in Microsoft. Just fyi, re Orgs are common in the software companies. They happen for good. Google, FB, MSFT all are known for reorgs. I am glad it happened for SES.
