Amazon - L5, AWS, Bay area Year 1: Estimated Compensation: $335,033 Base: $184,500 total RSU: 85 shares Guaranteed Cash: $137,100 [y1]. $100,500 [y2]. Microsoft - 62, Redmond Base - 156000 Sign on - 50,000 one time On hire stock - 150000/4 = 37500/ year Total so far -> 243500/ year Annual cash - 10% [avg performer] or 20% [top performer] of base. Annual refresher- 16,000 [avg performer] or 32,000 [top performer] given over 5 year I am leaning towards amazon. I have accepted their offer as they offered me three weeks back, and I did not have any other offer at that time. Amazon even started visa transfer. Microsoft offered me this week. Points to consider- 0. Have precisely one year left in my H1b [no i140 approved]. Both companies are willing to start i140 on day 1. The current company did start but don't want to stay here for one year. If perm can't be done, Microsoft will transfer me to Canada. Amazon prob will do the same. 1. I live in the bay area, so if all things equal will prefer the bay area 2. Heard amazon may do a stock split. 3. Also, I accepted the Amazon offer, so all things equal don't want to ruin the recruiter's performance. 4. Microsoft manager seemed better. Both managers are Indian. I am also an Indian. 5. Amazon PIP and WLB. Also, due to visa issues, I really can't afford to be in PIP. 6. Can not negotiate further. It is the final offer. 7. Married with no kids. Not planning to have kids, at least for the following year. 8. I am moving from the service industry [application developer] to Faangm, so I may need to upscale a lot. 8. Amazon did offer me ~290k in Seattle, but I preferred the Bay area. 9. Don't have any other offer as of now. Have one round pending with Google. In discussion with Salesforce, Adobe, Zoom. But I don't think anyone will match amazon. 10. I can take a pay cut if there is better WLB and better job security. But How much pay cut should I take? Not sure. Is Microsoft's offer comparable to Amazon at all? Is the difference minuscule? or huge. YOE - 9. TC-180k #tech #amazon #aws #amaoznaws #microsoft #offer #TC
You should ask for atleast L63 position at Microsoft. That will bump up all the numbers and will be a good package with a good WLB and job security.
They are offering 62 after knowing my amazon offer. This is the max my recruiter could do.
@OP, did MSFT not have bay area positions available?
If you are looking at money and willing g to put up with constant stack rankings and PIP anxiety , Amazon is way to go. You’ll learn a lot , but at that TC you’ll have lot of expectation and be a candidate for PIP if you under perform. MSFT is where you go if you don’t want to worry about getting fired and looking for great wlb. You’ll learn a lot at msft too but you’ll get more time to ramp up and deliver. (Based on my friends exp who was on the same boat) But ask for L63 using Amazon offer.

I know it’s hard to leave so much money on the table. Unfortunately if you are coming from WITCH or similar to Amazon at that TC you’ll find it very hard. Constant imposter syndrome and fear of PIP will ruin that feeling of high TC. Carefully consider it.
What role is this?
Above all do you have an approved PERM? The perm to approval is approx 2 year process. How are you going to manage that?
He said he doesn’t have i140 so no he doesn’t have PERM.
Then I’m interested to know how he’s going to sail through this with only 1 year. Nowadays the PWD itself is taking 8 months
Wow. Does MSFT give base salary increase of 10% to 20% every year?
They offered you $290k in Seattle? Damn.... That's way more than the $335k in Bay, around $380k.
Coming from a service industry, it might be disastrous at amazon as you might become the pip candidate.
How ??
Whats service industry ?
Amazon is hell, no amount of money bring piece of mind. And you are perfect candidate for pip.
How do you say so if he is perfect candidate ? He performed well in interviews so got the offer so why would he be perfect for pip.
Everyone at amazon must’ve performed well on the interview to get hired yet every year people get placed on pip. There’s even a story of a new grad getting pip’d within 6 months let alone my friend with a PhD in CS from a top 3 (globally ranked) getting pip’d in a year.
Take MS L62
Amazon will make you miserable
He is married so he should be good there
I’ve worked for both Microsoft and AWS. I should have never left Microsoft for AWS, as the culture was SO much better. I have made lots of $$ at AWS, but it wasn’t worth it.
