Offer1: Uber L3 Data Scientist. Base 130k / Bonus 10% / Stock 130k over 4 yrs / Signon 35k over 2 yrs; TC = 176k not including signon

Offer2: Google L3 Data Scientist. Base 120k / Bonus 15% / Stock 185k over 4 yrs no cliff / Signon 25k; TC = 184k not including signon

I have signed the Uber offer and now I get Google, should I renege given the current Coronavirus situation? I’m on H1B visa so a little worried about being laid off at Uber.

But I like the role at Uber very much, where I can do 100% ML (forecasting mostly). At Google it’s a small team and new product (search related), so I will be working on engineering (write production code) and data analytics most of the time, and just some ML where the product needs (recommender system probably).

My long-term goal is to work on the ML side of data science, not analytics. As for my next job I’m concerned about the following:
1. Whether I can gain ML or engineering skills
2. Promotion opportunities (from L3-L4 in shorter time)
3. Job security given the economic downturn for the next two years

Which one should I take?#career #offer

Go with your gut. If you go with your gut, you might regret it. If you don’t go with your gut, you’ll always regret it for the rest of your life.

Google is much stable in comparison to Uber.
Uber may not even exist or possibly get acquired. Stay safe for now and keep looking for better roles.

I see more regulation that will make Uber more expensive. That might make the world go back to cabs. It's not that Uber is somehow better than any other app which can hail a car. The main question is can Uber continue to not pay is drivers a living wage and hence undercut taxis. I don't think so.

I agree with Google. If the business model is not sustainable, it does not matter how big we get and how many competitors we beat. The only way that I see we can be hugely profitable is to increase the price after killing all competitors or successfully execute those auto-driving plan to replace drivers. Very small chance tho.

@OP go with Google. Uber has always been dysfunctional and must be even more so these days with a fall in revenue and their stock price (I left partly because nothing was getting done anymore, with colleagues openly blattering about the IPO or latest stock move at their desks). As a data scientist you will also benefit from Google's much vaster treasure trove of data.

I would take the most engineering focused role, sounds like Uber in this case.

  • Go to Google and renege Uber. Easy decision especially since you are on H1B. Yes you MIGHT have more interesting work at Uber, but it is a shot show inside so no amount of great work is worth that.
