I got an offer today from a pre-IPO company — offer details below:
- Base: 190k
- Stock: $120k over 4 years ($30k/year)
- Bonus: $0
- Location: Remote / NYC
My manager just sent me a text just now. I am expecting a counter from current employer at $220k base. I love my manager and I have a good reputation across the company, but not the culture and the people I have to continue working with. The counter came fast because they were finalizing my promo & raise already.
Is it worth taking the counter? Or should I take the offer?
I have given a verbal yes (pressured by the headhunter) but not yet signed officially. Would it really be that bad to back out from a verbally accepted offer?

However, you will probably be unhappy again in a couple of months and you may think about the missed opportunity. There is no right or wrong path forward, just the path you want to take and you will be content with.
