Offer Evaluation - LinkedIn vs AWS

Apr 4 27 Comments

LinkedIn Senior SWE (Apps): 195k base/10% bonus/90k RSU + signing bonus of 50k. First year TC ~350k, average over 4 years ~317k assuming no stock growth.

AWS L5 SDE (AWS Connect Apps): 200k base, 104k/year average RSU with back-heavy vesting schedule, signing bonus years 1 & 2. First year TC ~420k, average TC over 4 years ~390k assuming no stock growth.

Both offers are for NYC.
LI: excellent WLB, culture and benefits. Downside is lower TC, not much exposure to cloud in the teams available for matching, not many refreshers to speak of.

AWS: higher TC and better learning potential imo, refreshers aren’t the best but at least will restore TC in case the stock drops below target comp which limits downside in case of a market crash. Downsides are pip and 🍌, potentially poor WLB and oncall (although this is a newer team and oncall is supposedly light as it hasn’t been ramped to large scale yet).

In the end it’s culture/WLB/job security vs higher TC/learning opportunities. I prefer to optimize for TC + career growth and am willing to grind a bit but can’t afford really bad WLB at this stage as I have family commitments.

Current TC: 260k, YOE 8

LKDN for me. 319 is plenty of money for a comfortable life in NYC and you won't have to worry about getting piped every damn semester. Plus it's a senior position

U don’t have to worry about PIP. U r smart enough to get the offer, u r smart enough to be better than bottom 6%. In my experience, the bottom 6% are ppl who enter Amazon through the stupid 30 minute interview new grad program. I have never seen external hires being the bottom 6%

Pip is 10% of the population. If you're crushing, you'll be fine. If you're an average performer, you should probably be fine.

The problem is when you're an average performer and your boss doesn't like you. That's when things get interesting

Your first year TC won't be 420k at Amazon, right? You vest only 5% in the first year if I'm not wrong

  • Hi congrats on your offers! Would you mind sharing your prep for coding and sys. design? Were most of your coding questions medium difficulty? Thank you in advance.

Thanks! Mostly followed the standard prep advice folks give on here: LC for coding rounds and for system design read DDIA, Alex Xu’s system design book and Grokking the SD Interview course. I did ~450 LC which in hindsight was overkill. The vast majority of coding rounds across all my interviews were easy to average medium problems.

73K is a huge difference. Don't leave money on the table unless wlb is a prirotiy - you have hobbies, family etc.
If you don't have hobbies and responsiblities outside of work then take the cash and join LinkedIn as L6 in a few years.
