Thanks Blind for motivating me to interview with all the big TC numbers! Trying to decide between these two offers in the Seattle region. Both roles are full remote. Twitter seems to have an extra 10 to 15 days off every year compared to Dropbox from talking to the HMs. Dropbox IC3: 242k/15%/606k = ~$430k, final offer, no sign on bonus Twitter Senior: TBD, expecting ~$400k + $50k sign on, initial offer Dropbox has additional post-tax expense accounts that add up to be ~$11.5k pre-tax extra compared to Twitter's offer. How do refreshers compare at the two companies? I've gathered that Dropbox IC3 is $90k ~ $100k and my Twitter recruiter says their target for Senior is $144k (is this accurate?). Please post any thoughts below! Blind Tax TC: 255k YoE: 4 #dropbox #twitter
What is the signing bonus for dropbox?
$0, they got rid of it. I had an offer from elsewhere for ~$430k a year when you distribute the $50k sign on over 4 years and they gave me a $11k boost in the base salary instead of a sign on bonus.
Use your Dropbox offer to negociate higher base with Twitter. Once you get the final numbers from Twitter it should be clear who to join.
Are these remote positions?
Yes, both full remote, let me update that bit.
How were the interviews like? And your prep?
See my comment above regarding prep
Congratulations! You are a rockstar.
Since people asking, I might as well make this a separate comment. Background: Bachelor's from a target school. Top performer and tech lead in my current role. I have led a couple high impact cross team projects, mentored other senior engineers, and I'm an interviewer myself. Preparation: I prepared for 3 months straight for ~5 hours a day before applying to jobs. On weekends and holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was able to do ~10 hours instead. This was a second full time job to me. I took a couple weeks off in the middle to go on vacation with my girlfriend, but cancelled all my social events/celebrations otherwise. This amounted to ~350 hours of preparations by the time I got to my first phone screen. ~100 hours were spent on 225 LC questions ~200 hours were spent on system design (Grokking, DDIA, YouTube) ~50 hours were spent on behavioral questions While doing phone screens I was able to fit in another ~50 hours of LC and ~50 hours of system design, with ~20 hours of behavioral questions. Why so much preparation? Despite my strong background, I figured that I have no room for error with how few years of experience I have if I want the L5 equivalent level. To be chosen over another candidate with more yoe, the most convincing thing I can do is to wow every interviewer.
Jesus christ with 4 yoe? Incredible. Did you do many other interviews, and were these the only offers?
I applied to 50 jobs, got phone screens for 17. Out of the 17, I got on site invitations for 12. The ones I didn't get on-site invitations for were because: - Apple was too slow, so I withdrew before the phone screen - Amazon same story as Apple - One recruiter realized their internal policy doesn't allow for parallel interviews - LinkedIn down leveled me from staff due to not enough leadership when designing a hash map, so I withdrew - One HM and I mutually agreed I was a poor fit for the role and vice versa Out of the 12 invitations, I decided to attend 9 on sites for 7 companies. Got offers for all but 1 role, so 7 offers in total because 2 of the offers for the same company got combined. I have 2 other offers that are in the ballpark TC wise but I heard Twitter and Dropbox are the top 2 WLB wise out of them. Out of these 7: - 4 kept the L5 equivalent leveling and have HM approval to go to max of band/out of band - 1 gave me the pay but not the title - 1 gave me the title but couldn't match pay - 1 gave me neither the title nor the pay
@OP please comment on the type of questions asked in twitter coding rounds. Thanks!
240k base with 4yoe? Fml.
Dropbox is giving $242k as base salary now wtf is happening!! I know IC4s who joined recently on lower base. Oh but no joining bonus, thats a downer!! I got $220k base but it came with $60k joining too But honestly i would take $242k base any day. Haven’t heard of ANY company giving that kind of base to Senior roles
Yeah this cash component is higher than my current all cash TC. Can you comment on what refreshers are like at Dropbox for IC3?
Haha IC3 TC is around $400k+ for new offers. So op’s TC is not crazy but base is definitely at top. Refreshers are usually $100-120k (except last year when it was like $80-$110k) This year, we’ll know soon (in a month)
What is the Twitter offer breakdown ?
I'm wondering the same thing. Recruiter said they are usually RSU heavy, and have a 20% bonus. Even $210k base may be tough.
Is this ML? If not, do ML roles pay higher at Twitter?
Not ML, just distributed systems backend SWE
