Offer comparison, Uber vs PayPal
Currently 2 yoe, 140k tc Get two data scientist offers: Uber I3 (ds1), 180k tc (130k base) PayPal I4 (sr ds), 200k tc (150k base) Both are initial numbers so there is room for negotiation. And both roles are ml focused, not analytics. Is Uber possible to give 200k+ tc for I3, or should I negotiate for l4? How should I negotiate with the two companies in this case? It seems Uber has better brand name for data science, is it worth going there with lower level and less money? Is there a lot of difference having Uber and PayPal on the resume? Also it seems PayPal is more stable than Uber at this time, any risks for layoffs at Uber? Also I don’t need to move if I go to PayPal, and commuting to Uber seems like a problem as well...

Lol Both the companies have layoffs every year. Try to negotiate with Uber and join there .

Uber enforces equal pay and caps L3s. You most likely won't be able to get 200k. Also your interview performance determines level regardless of YOE. Probably won't be able to negotiate for L4
Tell Uber you got *much* higher elsewhere but you’re very excited about them. Be willing to lie and photoshop documents to prove your claim. If they don’t bump you up, take PayPal. If Uber gives you L4, then ask PayPal for more. Maybe post again when all numbers are final. I’d personally count Uber equity at sixty cents on the dollar because of layoff risk & WLB
I was few years with PayPal as DS. Uber has a very strong DS team with Zoubin Ghahramani and other world leading scientists (Slawek Smyl) and others. At PayPal, unfortunately, there is no people at such level. I hope, that it will be changed. (At PayPal, there very nice work life balance state of mind.))
