YOE : 8 years Current TC : 180k Location: Seattle. Not going to share team details to maintain anonymity ================================== Amazon offer Org : AWS Level L5 Base : 145K 1st year bonus 100k + 2nd year bonus 75k Stocks 125 over 4 years. Vesting 5% 1st year, 15% 2nd year, 40% 3rd, 40% 4th. TC : ~255k ===================================== Microsoft offer Org : Not Azure. :) Level 63 Base: 180k Sign on : 35k cash over 2 years. Sign on stock : 260k over 4 years. TC : 260k based on above number. MS said they have additional cash bonus that goes as high as 30% but I am assuming realistically it would be around 10-12%. They also have annual stock grant which can go as high as 40k, not sure what should be realistic assumption on this. So MS is saying TC should be 280k. ============================= Questions: - How realistic is the assumption from MS recruiter that my TC would 280 after considering annual cash bonus and stock bonus. - If above is true, will amazon match MS offer? If yes, I am inclined towards Amazon more as I liked team and work I would do in that team. If yes, Amazon will mostly add more cash bonus or stock? - Which company is better to join if I want to move up the ladder faster.
That amazon L5 you could argue is a little low for 8 yoe. 63 for MS seems doable. The comparisons aren’t always 1:1
Yes, I interviewed for L6, but looks like they wanted me to come in as L5 and then get considered for L6 and I felt that is reasonable.
Thats a really good offer for 63. And a good 63 can even get through an L6 loop at Amazon. I would suggest taking up the MSFT offer, they treat their employees much better and you can always switch teams in the future.
Yes thinks MSFT offer is better especially if azure is taking over the world
added org details. I am thinking of negotiating with Amazon to get better offer.
Have you considered that MS benefits are actually 25-30k more than amazon?
What does 100k + 75k in your Amazon offer means?
Updated original post. But 100 is 1yr cash bonus and 76 is 2nd year cash bonus.
For L63 on target cash bonus is 15% of base
With this YOE you should get L6 in Amazon. You got down leveled. However that’s a pretty good L5 offer. But I really hate how Amazon give refreshers so I like Microsoft more.
As I mentioned before, yes I interviewed for L6 but they felt it is better to come in as L5 and then get considered for L6 and I thought that is reasonable.
From my experience. L5 to L6 promo is not easy even you’re external hire with “promised” fast track promotion. 2 years will be fast but 3 to 4 yrs is more reasonable timeline - if Amazon did not wear you out by the time.
Microsoft, any day.
care to elaborate? Also, realistically how easy it is to switch teams?
Microsoft, easy. And 15% is the target bonus (Median? Average?), so 20k bonus a year is reasonable.

Microsoft you'll work 35-45 hours a week depending on how much you like working. Amazon you'll work 70-80 hours a week. MS vest is 25% per year. Amzn vest is shite. I think its a pretty easy choice lol.
Everything's about the TC isn't it
Type of work I would do in Amazon i felt would be better than the team I would join in Microsoft. So my inclination is towards Amazon.
