Offer from VMware

I currently have an offer from VMware for a new grad position. How is the company and the work? Is it a reputed company when I apply for other jobs some years from now? The salary being offered to me is 125k base, 25k sign on and 40k RSUs

It depends on the BU you are joining. Some products are going great, some not so great

This is for the Propel program. How are Cloud Native Applications and Cloud Management business units doing?

VMware cashcow Dec 5, 2017

Cloud native is new and they are doing some interesting work. CMBU is not doing great and their revenue is declining

They are recently started to do well with aws partnership. I can tell if your compensation is good or bad based on your job location and weather you are mts1 or mts2. Let me know

If you are an MS candidate, it should be MTS2 or MTS1 if Bachelors (although many times the offer letter does not mention it explicitly). 125k base is very good. Does it include bonus? As a comparison, I would not consider VMware to be in the league of Google/Facebook/Amazon/Microsoft etc. it is more comparable with IBM/Dell/HP although by name and brand it does sound a little better than them. Work wise, you might get to work on interesting challenges but the most annoying thing is the pace is EMBARASSINGLY slow You can definitely ask for more RSUs. For a reference I know a Propel candidate who got 60k RSUs. Also beware that VMW stock at this point is kind of in its highs.

What I actually wanted to know was, does working at VMware adversely affect chnaces to apply at FAANG in the future? Also, do they also give out RSU refreshers. If they do, how often are they? I actually have an offer from Microsoft too but I think VMware mentioned that they can match that offer and on the other hand Microsoft isn't ready to budge

Oracle mbmvu76 Dec 5, 2017

Yes it's adverse. You should work at a startup so they don't know anything about it and you can spin it to your advantage.

The salary is pretty high for mts1.. never heard they gave this much to mts1. will stay away from cmbu at all cost, as a new engineer you will find it difficult to fit in.

FYI the managers in Vmware in general are slightly on a different tangent than the rest of the Silicon Valley

VMware laura Dec 8, 2017

Could you elaborate on this thought, please?

VMware miva42 Dec 9, 2017

Most of the managers that are in Vmware have stuck around for 10+ years. Silicon Valley is rapidly changing, they are kind of not aware of it. Hierarchy is very important at Vmware and is encouraged at Vmware. There is a lack of transparency in Vmware which is not the norm. And definitely I have seen a very good engineer getting terminated because he/she spoke up for the right reason.

That was very helpful. Thank You I was also wondering if Vmware offers RSU refreshers every year? I am planning to ask the recruiter for an increase in RSU to around 75k. Would that be the right amount?

VMware miva42 Dec 6, 2017

They don’t give refresher stocks to everyone. It depends. You can try for more rsu. I am told for more rsu they need to get an approval from higher up. Did you negotiate your base salary? Do you hold a bachelors degree or a master?

I have a master's degree. I am not sure if it's mts 1 or higher The salary is 125k + 12% I was thinking of asking for higher RSU instead of base mainly because it would be easier to ask the recruiter as RSU increase is always easier than base increase. Compared to my friends who are joining other companies, I feel the base salary is very respectable and hence I am planning to ask more for RSU. Do RSU refreshers actually depend on which BU you are in?

VMware $Bnbb13$ Dec 9, 2017

I doubt they will give you 75k refreshers many at mts2/3 get that also for an mts1 your base is pretty high.I have not heard this base for mts1

VMware UGcx03 Dec 11, 2017

He's MTS-2

VMware $Bnbb13$ Dec 11, 2017

She/he - they mentioned it’s MTS-1 and not 2
