0) Have a clear narrative in your mind of where and how you bring value to this company, so you can use it at critical points during the negotiations
1) do NOT share your expected numbers first, never share any numbers first. Demand they come through with a number first. ALWAYS! Whoever comes first, usually ends last in this game.
2) Have a “bare minimum to make me happy” in mind (does not have to follow a formula based on your current pay. Could be a totally made up number BUT it has to be a number that makes you happy and is worth the risk of changing jobs for).
3) NEVER accept their first offer even if they claim it’s their best. That is ALWAYS a lie.
4) When they finally come back with numbers, if they are lower than your “bare minimum from step 2)) quote them your bare minimum + 15% to 30% more (exact % depends on how confident you feel in your interview performance and how much they need you for the role).
**In case the numbers are higher than your bare minimum, push them for an extra 10-15% and take whatever they agree to within 1-2 rounds of negotiations.**
5) allow them to push you back on your number about half way through your extra 15-30% or if super necessary all the way down to your bare minimum (don’t forget, this needs to be a number that by itself makes you happy already)
6) be flexible in where the money comes from (base, options, bonuses) and suggest a few different configurations if they are not able to come to your bare minimum with their current set up (e.g., “ok, if we are maxed out on base, maybe you can help me with a more generous starting bonus and an extra 10% in equity) because every company has wiggle room to fudge those.
7) If you come to an agreement, always end the process with how that is a bit less than what you would’ve hoped for but you are willing to take the L because you love the team/company/product so much (makes them feel like they did a good job and got one on you when in reality they got played).
It should be sde2.
BTW Oracle TC?
