I received an offer as a 2021 new graduate for $60,000. Initially I was given 5 days to accept the offer. I politely requested a deadline extension of 3 days and re expressed my interest, and I got my offer withdrawn from the C.O.O. This company has around 70 employees

Is this a common thing as a new graduate? I thought the worst that can happen is them saying “no”. I didn’t expect the extreme side of my offer getting withdrawn

I’m so down now after going through so many applications and interview rejections, just when I land an offer I get it rescinded. I got a response saying that the c.o.o really doesn’t appreciate being treated as a “backup option”, and says I have absolutely no leverage as a “young person”.

This coo was also calling and interviewing me at random unscheduled times even when I gave him my availabilities. I know it’s not a place I would want to work if I was in a better position. But as a new graduate i just can’t afford to be selective with companies.

  • Sounds like you dodged a bullet here. His actions reflect what he’d be like to work with and someone who thinks you have no leverage will treat you like shit.

  • You would have been miserable and looking for a way out anyway. You would have to job hunt while on the job. Now, job hunting can continue to be your focus.

That sucks and it’s not common.

Why did you ask for a deadline extension in the first place if you weren’t in a position to be selective?

That’s fair. However, it wasnt a bad read from the COO.

He probably sensed you weren’t thrilled with the offer and company and would likely be an attrition risk from day 1; so it just wasn’t a good fit on either end

The way they delivered the message and treated your schedule during the interview window wasn’t professional tho

Here’s the lesson you learn. When you don’t actually have leverage, gain leverage by accepting the offer and then continuing to interview. Renege later if you need to, don’t worry about burning bridges, that’s a myth. Any place that would consider it a burnt bridge is not a place you’d want to boomerang back to.
