Started interviewing at a few places and was curious about a couple of things.

1. Assuming I get an offer from place ‘x’- how tied in is my TC likely to be to my current TC. I.e., if I’m making ~140 right now, does it mean it’s difficult to get an offer around ~200( with and without competing offers)

2. How much is a reasonable Pay/TC for a compiler engineer in the Bay Area with 5 yoe? I looked in levels and blind…and it’s really hard to differentiate between different specializations.

2b. Am I overthinking this and there is no difference between different software engineers?

So unless you voluntarily share your current TC, employers won’t be able to ask you for your current TC. So your offer will be dependent on market value as well as your expectations, so ~200k could be attainable if that’s the current market norm.

Not sure about compiler engineer pay/TC. Looks like around 140k base?

  • Most states (the ones that matter) cannot ask your current salary.
