Why do young and bright Americans choose to live in 💩 areas?

Can someone help me understand why the most ambitious and the brightest young Americans take pride in living in disgusting places?

Urban New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle all have immense homelessness and drug addiction problems. They’re filthy and dangerous. Meanwhile, young professionals laugh at clean and well-organized suburban areas like SV or Seattle’s Eastside. They would rather extend their daily commutes to walk the defecated streets of San Francisco and be attacked by homeless drug addicts than live in suburban Kirkland or Bellevue, WA.

I moved to US from Europe almost 10 years ago and I still can’t fathom how disgusting some of the urban areas are. Don’t get me wrong, US is the greatest place on Earth; I just struggle to understand people’s choices.
