JS and even CSS is so much harder to master than stuff like Python and SQL

The language is not the hard part of backend. The hard part is scale, concurrency, etc.

In most cases those are solved problems as well. In most cases, backed dev is working with mostly “solved” problems. I could come up with a list of novel stuff on the frontend too.

If the comparison is going to be “everything versus some ui” then it’s not really fair.

Ironically at some orgs. I’ve worked at the front end teams have rigorous code reviews since everything we touch will be impacting users directly either UI or data wise. While I noticed our backend teams literally merge their own PRs. Front end deals with data management in interesting ways that I feel the backend teams discount in general.

Eh, you don’t have to think nearly as hard with front end work imo. It is frustrating tho

Interviews are harder for sure. You need to know LC and the domain knowledge of web, which is vast.
I have started to interview for SDE instead of FEE because of this. So much trivia js questions out there :(

  • I think it’s a fair argument. The front-end ecosystem is insanely complex. If you’re working front-end, you’re likely going to become full stack too, whereas back-end is less likely to touch front-end.
