Spoke with an AWS recruiter today about working in “professional services”. Would be a solutions architect working contracts with various clients. Have special needs kids and lots of health emergencies. Concerned about wlb. Anyone have experience working in “professional services”? Much appreciated.

Know a lot of ex consultants who are SAs in AWS ProServe. It’s very similar to the Google CE role or the MS Services Client Architect role. Client facing and you have a 70/30 comp split plus RSUs. I interviewed for a SA job years ago but discontinued the process (long story). I wouldn’t expect the WLB to be great because everyone I know there is working all the time. Try applying for the Google CE or MS Services role equivalent, they have better WLB.
SA is different from ProServe. ProServ requires 70% utilisation which means you need to be billable for 28 hours a week. It’s terrible WLB, so stop spreading misinformation.
Also OP they don’t hire the brightest bulbs into ProServe, as evidenced by this poster who can’t even read 🙃 But in all seriousness they hired up some of the dumbest people I ever worked with. And that’s saying a lot considering my present employer.
WLB balance is good. 40-45hr/wk. I’m not an SA but I work with lots of Them
I’ve been looking at similar roles. Do you know what the TC looks like?
TC is $320k. $140k - $150k base.
That’s gotta be on the high end of L6. Depending where you level out and what the position is (Specialty etc) I’d put the expected TC range to be anywhere from about $190k-$325k for L5-L6.
With special needs kid, I would be cautious because proserve is meant to be onsite at client location and involves a lot of traveling post pandemic. That’s one of the reasons I declined a proserve offer.
^^^ lies I am a consultant in Proserve (not SA) and I’ve traveled 3 times in the last 2 years for 2 days on-site each. Rest of time has been 100% at home work. Pre covid I did travel 50% but there is no talk about this amount coming back
My hiring manager told to be prepared for 70% travel - that was in Jan 2020. This is even before I joined.

ProServ has pre-sales goals, utilisation goals and multiple projects at the same time.
Based on my last question here in blind what I understood is - there is a lot of work sold to customers from proserve but not enough engineers. So wlb is bad.
SA is pre-salss and Proserve is post-sales. Different roles. I've been in both orgs and Proserve is a toxic place with WLB ranging from bearable to awful. Would not recommend. If you want the WLB see if the recruiter can interview you for SA role instead. If you thrive in a cut-throat, back-stabbing environment and like to implement/build stuff, Proserve might be your thing.
So is an SA role in pre-sales okay for WLB?

Women, help me understand why this is inspirational
I’ve never heard of an SA role in ProServ to be honest. The WLB shouldn’t be too bad, you’re essentially a billable resource on projects and will work directly with customers on their projects to produce deliverables. The only potential issue I would see would be the need to be on customer meetings with schedules you won’t be in too much control over.
