I work as an Engineering director and there is a high likelihood of layoff. This role would likely translate to a Sr. Manager in most large companies. Given the market scenario, i am not confident about finding an equivalent role in 60 days grace period allowed in H1B. My spouse is also on H1B in a stable company, but doesnt have an I-140 yet (multiple job hops). what are my potential options to continue looking for a job? TC: 340K after crash.
It is apparent that middle management risks their jobs more during recession but depending on your skills and experience, you can still be valuable for companies that are hiring leadership roles. If you keep option of relocation open, you’ll have more chance of finding job sooner...
Agreed, with taking care of kids relocation is not the easiest thing to do. But if it means job vs no job, the harder decisions need to be taken.
Yes, it is last resort
Is the layoff related to COVID-19 and crash in the market?
Yup, most smaller companies won’t be able to run their payroll in a reduced demand market.
But Groupon isn't a small company :( How do you sense an upcoming layoff as an IC? Is it time to just assume you might get laid off?
Change to H4 visa and wait for the H4 EAD. In the mean time look for work to continue on H1B.
My spouse does not have the I-140 yet. In that case, what are my options?
I won’t recommend anyone change status to H4 from H1 as h4 ead is on the radar for removal
You are still in a good position. Your spouse is on H1B, so you can stay back in H4 on worst case scenario, and keep looking for jobs. Also, start applying ASAP.
1. If your wife has Labor then you are fine. Get on H4 , your H1 will freeze and you can activate again once you find job. You do not need to go through Lottery. 2. Find any stable job you can get, dont worry about Sr/Jr roles for now as I think economy is likely to suffer like 2008.
That sounds like a good plan.
Good luck friend
depending on your location, there may still be opportunities out there.
What do you think about IC layoffs in groupon?
If you haven’t already signed your severance agreement, you should ask your company to keep you on payroll for the amount of time your severance would be, instead of paying you the lump sum. I work in immigration, and this is always what I try to urge my companies to do. The USCIS only looks at payroll records when determining the 60 day window, so if you are still receiving “paystubs” for that period of time, it will allow you to delay the 60 day window, and give you more time to find a new job
