Current TC: USD 140,000 with 2yoe in Bay area. In Oracle/OCI, their cloud offering is pretty new to the market and I've heard that they have great talent. Team that operates as a startup but with great funds and ambition, I see high upside and growth opportunities. Offered position: IC3, Senior MTS, offered TC: USD 222,875 in Seattle In Amazon, I'll get to work with bright minds on a distributed system architecture. Offered position: L4 SDE. Yet to get TC details on this- they'll try to match (though they said that it may be hard to match Oracle's high numbers), location: Seattle. Undeniably, in both teams I'll get to work with scale. Who doesn't enjoy a great TC, but I wish to identify and join a team that offers great growth opportunities. Update: TC 176k in Amazon, 223k in OCI
OCI is continuing to grow and the comp increases between levels is pretty hard to beat. Lots of room for you to define new services and plenty of room for upward mobility. When you go to IC4 you’ll start looking at 350-400+ at least historically.
Great points, noted!
I work with a lot of the cloudsec people so I can give you more info if you want to DM me.
Don’t come to Amazon as an L4. My honest recommendation. If you want the brand name then you can take the bait but this is high pressure environment and the TC will not be comparable to Oracle. Also L4 SDEs do get pretty easily pip’d so if you slack you are out. OCI also has layoffs but they don’t happen every quarter and it’s RIF quota is not as high as attrition rate at Amazon.
Any reason why there are 3 more votes in favor of Amazon than Oracle? I really wish to gain perspective.
People can’t stand the fact that even with all their fang prestige, they make way less than us. They have been rooting for our failure for so long but our end is not in sight. Now it’s like stock market. They think I wish I joined two years ago cause oci will sure fall next year. If I try now I will be laid off. But we keep going and their anguish shows on polls and comments. They can’t stand their miserable pay, they can’t take the risk and join us. They are torn. Only thing they can do is show off how great azure or aws is. Especially true for Microsoft folks.
Is Amazon really so prestigious? I know that Oracle doesn't necessarily come so often in news or its not listed in the Cracking the coding interview book, but the interview was more challenging there. I find this comparison of names to be more like Gucci vs Prada 😂 On a more serious note, so far it looks like I'll get to work more full swing and build services from scratch at OCI and the security team has a high visibility. I'm looking for any arguments, if at all, in favor of Amazon to gain a well rounded perspective.
The Cloud Security team under Eran F. is quite impressive after coming to Oracle after Google
I might have an opportunity to move to Eran's org from a non-OCI part of Oracle. Think I should take it? What makes Eran's org special within OCI?
Without any doubt go to Amazon (x-amazon ,@oci)
(cons 'x-amazon oci) ? you missing a backtick?
I personally know two leaders in OCI security team... Great folks and their teams are doing excellent work...I personally would go work for them anytime if I had the chance... That said, OCI is still having a bad rep from the last rif and people are still looking to move away if possible, so I leave it to your best judgement..
Update: Amazon TC is 176k
What did I say in the first comment? 😂
😄 Thanks!
Amzn is just sucks
Stay the eff away from Oracle! If you were joining OCI 4 years ago, my answer would have been different. The 350-400k TC of ic4s is a thing of the past. But I can understand that a 45K difference is hard to say No to.

Go for TC. Can always switch back to Amazon. Also Amazons team doesn’t sound very interesting. And 222k is above band for SDE1 at Amazon. Let alone matching they won’t even come close.
