Got a return offer from my internship at LinkedIn and it’s on an incident response team. Most my classmates are working in just general SWE so not sure if specializing early on good or bad? Basically what’s the career outlook if I work as a incident response security engineer for next 5 years? (Assuming I move up too during that time) #tech #Security
As Airbnb mentioned as long as you're a builder it's a great position. IR roles often work on building threat detection tools as well for TDIR automation. The most critical piece of knowledge is to become deeply intimate with your company's environment as you will be making decisions under pressure that directly impact the business.
Salary growth in IR specialty is faster than general swe at top employers. It is also very high visibility work.
