Overhire and layoff

I was working for lyft until 2 weeks ago and now moved to Google. 25% of my team was let go and noone was given a chance to look for job in different team. My manager and director had calls with me on the day I left. They both shed some crocodile tears, gave some suggestions on resume and referred to few companies. They told lay offs came at the VP level and their hands were tied. Now they got green signal to hire new folks and giving new offers. What bs is this? My past team members were smart and some have got offers from FAANG and some havent started the process. On the last day Lyft engineering head Eiser told shit happens and Lyft self driving chief told decisions were suboptimal in fort night. I am on Visa and had 2 crazy weeks. Overall I am extremely disappointed and since they pay slightly more than FAANG, management thinks they can get away with hire and fire. #severance #layoff #lyft

How did you move to Google in two weeks? Did you turn down a previous Google offer within the last year?

Google SWSb30 OP May 15, 2020

Yes

Google DPPL54 May 15, 2020

I see, luckily you had that option! I have friends at Lyft who are in a similar boat but turned down the FANG offers >1 year ago and have to go through the process again. Pretty stressful times for those on a visa. From what I’ve heard there’s a lot of confusion on how they chose which SWEs to let go and many were solid engineers. My guess is there will be a mass exodus from Lyft in the coming months.

Btw how eisar doing. Still trolling financial planning mailing lists in Lyft?

OP, did they layoff from self driving teams too?

Google SWSb30 OP May 15, 2020

Yes many!

I had an offer in 2018 in Ashesh Jain’s — now a director — perception team. I was not impressed with the interview, particularly his leadership didn’t seem sound as he responded too vaguely. Dodged the bullet, as I can only see Lyft’s so-called Level5 is decade away! And COVID gonna liquidate their stock till 2021.

Yeah i don’t get it. It’s like they just wanted to be able to tell investors they saved X dollars through cuts. Once that was done, back to hiring

eBay ferragni May 15, 2020

Well I got an email from Lyft recruiter to interview for a software engineer position 🤦‍♂️ no idea why they laid off people if they had to hire again

Maybe for their employees' green card applications?

Target leet_life May 15, 2020

eBay: when did you get your call?

Salesforce ForcedFart May 15, 2020

The people left over at Lyft are probably gonna have it worse; management is gonna crack the whip till they're brains fall out

Amazon fWiX20 May 15, 2020

I think they didn't want to create thundering herd type problems. If you cut 20% there's no way you have open headcount for everybody and you're just going to create a competitive nightmare as everybody stabs each other's back to get another team's position. Probably much easier to just let go.

I just interviewed with an engineer in Lyft and it was pretty bad. Either his morale was very low or he has too much ego or could be his working style, he wasn't talking properly not even listening, looking here and there. Lyft folks why are you still hiring if you have condition like this.

Rally Health FUPayMe$$ May 18, 2020

Bruh, if a Lyft engineer is interviewing at a shit tier company like Expedia, then either he is just interviewing for practice or for getting a counter offer lol. His tc at Lyft would be multiple times the equivalent title at Expedia.

Lyft HMe May 15, 2020

Yes situation is pretty bad, I was affected by the layoff and the preparing for the interviews is so stressful. Any help/advice for google interviews?

Cisco PPlq31 May 15, 2020

Is Google still hiring?

Lyft HMe May 16, 2020

Yes but they slow down which means less head counts and more picky
