Hi all, I’m new to Blind and I’m a new grad from Europe. I just secured a Grad Offer for a trading desk at a BB in London and I couldn’t help it but to notice in this forum that salaries in London in finance seem to be much lower than in the US. My TC offer is 50k£ + 5k£ signing bonus. Bonus not confirmed yet.

Is it a thing to access the US job market in finance after a masters in the US or you know people/know if it’s possible to do this move also without an US degree?

Much easier with US degree. Unless you go to Oxford.

Depends on what type of finance. HFT quants for example don’t need to have US degree, but preferably the non-US degree should be PhD.

Yeah I see. No for the moment I’m interested in discretionary macro specifically. Do you know how the hiring for that is in the US?

  • Agree with you that the comp is notably higher in US

  • Will you work often with your U.S. desk?

I often talk with our London desk and one of our U.S. guys moved to the London desk a few years back for a higher status role.

Maybe try and leverage internal relationships to transfer over? I don't know if that is as much of a thing at BBs vs firms my size

    • His new role was of higher status and responsibility so I'm sure he made more though I'd guess not as much as he would have made if he secured that same promotion within the New York office.
LON Junior role < NY Junior role < LON Senior role < NY Senior role

Would agree on it being easier with a US degree, but it also will be useful if you start to think about the specific desk you want to work on. Compensation might not differ as a first year analyst, but the ability to find a seat will

Yeah I see what you mean and I agree. I’ll be in rates because my preference is really on macro.

In discretionary macro it seems to me that the only way to start is really on the sell side. At least, in London I still haven’t met 1 student hired by a discretionary macro hf(capula, balyasny, etc).

Do you know if that is the case also in NY?
