Google on-site prep

Feb 22 11 Comments

I have a google on-site and the technical recruiter just sent me the prep material…. It’s not what I was expecting and pretty daunting. I knew I’d need to devote a ton of time over the next 6 or so weeks to prepare but the list I’m seeing looks like it would take around 6 months.

I haven’t interviewed in over a year and I do not have a cs degree, so maybe this isn’t as overwhelming to others. I’m hoping that they mistakenly assumed I wanted to shoot for l4/5 (would be perfectly content with L3), can anyone confirm?

So far my plan of attack is to:
1) work through cracking the code interview
2) take the Princeton algorithm courses on coursera
3) leetcode along the way

I haven’t scheduled the on-site but I’m going to try and push it as far back as they’ll let me.

Looks the same as what I got. Recruiters send you way more prep than you actually need. Odds are stuff like radix sort and a* won't actually show up, but incase it does they want it on the list.

It's kinda a big list of "what ifs". I used it as kinda a basis along with a lot of other sources to compile a concrete list for myself (CTCI/Blind 75/top tagged Q's/grokking sys design/multiple YT sources/mock interviews with former nooglers). This was a few years back when I was hunting L5 but Blind 75 is usually a good starting point for cramming.

I goof'd back then but not this year.

  • Op you need to figure out the study plan yourself and what is most important. For anything below L5 there is usually no system design. Don't waste time on all the topics mentioned there. They will tell you need to know how to fly to the moon by making rocketship yourself. You need to think in probabilitis. What types of questions google asks for this position? Good gauge is recently asked questions. Do some research, and focus more on these types of questions. Spend just a little time on anything else
