PIP == Time to GTFO

I have seen too many of my people fall into the trap of taking PIP at face value. IMHO most of the time a PIP is really just a courtesy that you need to find a new job.

Yes, PIP is just a way for the company to gather documentation to fire you. It's a no-win situation for the employee.

Even if you get out of it, the damage to your rep within the company is crippling. In fact, your rep is already terrible for u to be put in a PIP. So all scenarios point to GTFO

It is supposed to stand for Performance Improvement Plan. At some companies it is something you can actually recover from. However at many companies it is really a "warning shot" that you are in the "you should get a new job" cross-hairs. It is confusing to people who take messaging at it's face value because they phrase it as if it really is something that you can execute on. No one is ever going to tell you that though. If you can find people who actually got PIP'd and recovered then that is a useful data point for your company.

PIP is quite common at Amazon... May be it would be a way to fire people in other companies. However, in amazon if you meet the goals you are good

How common is PIP at Nordstrom?

Nordstrom BlueRibbon Feb 22, 2020

It does happen but I can't guess at the frequency. I have seen it happen at least 3-4 times. However I do think that it takes a lot of manager footwork to put someone on a PIP.

the getting out rate is around a half, not too bad

I’ve got a coworker that I’m 90% sure is on PIP right now. Our group doesn’t really do that, but he’s a deserving case. The response of those in the know is curious. Those who have been around a while instantly wrote him off, assuming he wouldn’t make it because “nobody survives PIPs”. He is actually improving pretty drastically, and I think has a decent chance of making it.
