I’m a PM at T for about 6 months now. I have 2 yoe as a pm and other 2 as a data scientist. I graduated from a top tier university but majored in Statistics. Although I took a couple of CS classes and used programming languages (R & Python) throughout my career, I don’t have any experience as a SWE. Are DS career and stat major also considered as technical background? Also, I want to break into FAANGMULA+ companies before I’m 30. Can you guys give me some advice on the career decisions considering my goal? Like should I look for other opportunities now bc T is not enough on my resume? I’ve heard that getting into FAANGMULA+ as a pm is really tough so I was wondering how you got into PM at big tech and what advice you would give me who don’t have much experience and less technical background. Give me some advice, sensei! Tech interviews can be hit or miss on algorithms versus systems design. I don’t think that should hold you back in most cases, lean into your data science strengths or look for a PM role in a related area. The best way to practice interviewing is to interview. Take advantage of remote interviews while you can and internalize rejection as a learning experience not that you aren’t qualified. While I don’t have one, a top tier MBA can make it easier to get into big tech through MBA intern programs that feed into L4+ offers pending previous experience.
Thanks!
You need more exp as PM if you want to break into FAANG+ - Typical PM’s in FAANG have at least 6+ yrs on their belt. You are expected to drive high level product strategies, drive calls and handle meetings across teams so you need exp and ability to understand the inner workings of business’s.

Your resume probably won’t even get a real person to look at it. So either get someone to refer you, or try and get the role you want at some startup (not at&t). Also you have 4+ years of exp and you think people care about your university experience?
Thanks
