In PM interviews at FAANG type companies you often get a case question like tell me a product you like and how would you improve it, or how would you design x for y...etc. I know companies look for a certain fairly sequenced structure but does anyone find the structure limiting to truly creative and inspiring idea? Do you start with the idea and work a structure around it or do you go the typical goal > user personas > pick one ...etc . Sometimes I even feel it’s not necessary to segment users and instead of focusing on niche needs it’s better off to think big ideas that are widely applicable and differentiated. Any thoughts?
I think companies look for linear thinking but also an awareness of business goals and how your process may change due to certain conditions
Exactly it’s this linearity desires but doesn’t lead to the best products. I like your point on balance

Use with any framework that works for you man. I don’t think companies ask for a specific structure, they look for coherence and a structure that makes sense and works. If you think that you want to start with big ideas first then go for it but lay out why you’re doing that before hand. Why are you asking this, aren’t you at Facebook?
