I'm a marketing and comms manager in the non-profit sector with 6+ YOE on major international projects and partnership management. I'm looking to move into a PMM role in the tech industry, specifically for a company like Twitch or Discord, but have trouble getting a foot in the door without straight tech experience. I've tried applying for more entry level roles in design or copywriting, but no luck. Looking for actionable advice for networking or getting early experience before trying again. #ProductMarketing #Discord #Reddit #Twitch #Gaming #Tech
For perspective, I have 3 YOE in B2B marketing for SaaS tech companies and recently applied to a Discord PMM position with referral. They rejected me because I didn’t have enough direct experience with creator communities. I think they’re specifically looking for someone with extremely relevant experience
Wow, that's very surprising. I know I have my own massive biases while trying to break into the industry so fresh out of another sector, but it's baffling to me how cross-functional skills and experiences appear to not be as useful as working on the exact same thing in three different companies previous. I suppose a PMM certification might be a good step one while considering next moves! Best of luck to you! It's a rough market out there right now.
Twitch and Discord are higher tier companies that want previous growth or product marketing experience from other growing tech companies. Why not try to break out into a start-up and go to these others companies after?
Thank you for your advice. I suppose the decision I have to sit with now is if a "maybe" from one of these companies in the far future is worth losing a lucrative career working on major projects now. Perhaps in the interim, I'll aim for taking courses and attempting to network while I make the decision to leave for a startup or not. Thanks again for this, it's very helpful.
DM me I’m working on helping people switch into tech jobs like yourself. I’ve been working on a tool to help with this problem. Checkout mutoapp.com. The idea being that if you want to move into a career in tech from a non tech role, the app tells you what skills you need, suggests online courses for skills you don’t have and even pairs you up with a mentor. Check it out.
