Is visa sponsorship an issue at DataDog?

Oct 26, 2021 25 Comments

Have an H1-B with approved I-140. Recruiter didn't seem to mention there will be any issue. But from online digging/Blind I'm seeing concerning things like "visa sponsorship depends on performance": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21937473

Is it that they will transfer over my H1b but not actually file for green card which means I can work for only six years?

If they say no visa because of performance. Just don’t even join. You can easily find new opportunities

    • Of course. I didn't even imagine this would be an issue since recruiter didn't mention this at all!

Finding out it maybe an issue later now from Blind.

Just make sure to get your recruiter and hiring manager to agree on what you want and it should be fine. People in Datadog don’t lie to get candidates to sign. If you feel like your situation is special and they might not know enough on what they are committing to, ask them to verify with their immigration specialists before you sign.

  • I heard the policy for green card is 6 month with exec approval.

  • As a good performer, I asked for L1 transfer, but looks like it's not doable on my team

I'm on a TN visa but know many folks from France working in the NYC office. Lots of them on H1B, and also there's people who went directly for green cards and were lucky enough to get it on their first try. Datadog supported all of them in this process. It may depend on the position too, for software engineering I'd say it's very flexible

I would say your situation it's way easier than filing a whole new petition. They shouldn't have too much trouble to do so. I'd definitely ask the recruiter so he/she can answer how the process would look like or channel you with the appropriate person

    • My recruiter didn't seem to think it'd be an issue at all. Which is why I was a little surprised to see people mention visa as an issue at all. But blind overwhelmingly seems to be suggesting it could be a real pain? Guess it's only for new apps then?
