Why do tech companies hire PMs right out of college when SWE/SDE believe theyre not really any help? or are these one offs and PMs are actually great? if not, and their so bad why do companies continue to hire them right out of college but dont equip them with the proper training to do the job right?
It depends on the company. Google, Lyft, FB, GE all have great APM training type programs
But why do companies prefer hiring a fresh graduate as PM and train them, instead of giving an experienced SWE a chance at becoming PM and training them? Experience brings subject matter knowledge, which is valuable in a PM role
How many SWE want to become PMs?
The ones that don’t get through Leetcode whiteboard interviews 😀
That's terrible, so you have to be an SWE reject? What kind of profession would that be? No smart person would want to associate with it.
I think the most successful PMs typically have MBAs plus years of startup or consulting experience. For a fresh college grad PM, it would be extremely difficult to go up at large-scale tech companies.
Why do tech companies hire PMs right out of college and experienced without both technical, business, and cross-functional experience? Better question
It's a new area. They don't know who to hire. Valuable PMs should have at least 5 years of subject matter expertise.
