Their value comes from continuously readjusting your perspective and priorities against a reasonable baseline. They avoid getting that tunnel vision where you get so busy tinkering on something you forgot how and if you should even build it in the first place.
They’re oriented around ensuring you’re accountable to the people who pay money to the company—the customers, as it were. Make the right decisions on behalf of customers. Simple. Not easy. Lots of people don’t like accountability, and will give many incentive reasons excusing themselves for why. Let’s see how the comments here go for proof.

Principles are good in theory but at a certain point, mass stupidity and turf wars take over
Why is Amazon acting like it has a high bar and that it needs to filter candidates based on these leadership principles? Who cares? Even the FBs and Googles of the world are having a hard time getting good people. Is Amazon a first choice for anyone? Perhaps Amazon needs to learn the employer principles: 1. Employees are people too. 2. Dont be a douchebag.
I like that Amazon has a slightly different process in hiring with emphasis on leadership principles. Otherwise, everyone will be studying to get into top college oops top companies based on the same standard leetcode exam. If you hire people based on the same criteria as no. 1, you will lose all of the top candidates based on that criteria and also lose out some quality candidates who may not be good at the criteria. Basically Amazon is being smart. Other companies not so much. They will lose their employees as soon as they are more prepared to pass the interviews at G.
Amazon is business-first and realizes that it doesn’t need the world’s best engineers and highest engineering standards to make a shit load of money and attain $1T valuation.
