For those interested in TikTok/ByteDance: Go on LinkedIn, do a search for “engineer”, and then filter for people whose previous companies is “TikTok”. You’ll see that 100% of people who have left have left before 1 year, and 50% of people who have left have left before 6 months. Just an FYI for those who are thinking of joining.
There’s a current director of engineering at Google who had a: - 12 year tenure at Microsoft - 5 year tenure at Facebook - 4 year tenure at Snap Followed by a 4 month tenure at TikTok Can we spot the difference?
Is it that bad? What are people staying longer doing differently?
I can’t speak to why people stay longer than one year, since my entire team has been here for less than one year (although many people’s 1-year marks are coming up soon). I’m making this post to provide some insight into what the average tenure at TikTok looks like, which may or may not be due to some poor cultural issues that I myself have experienced. :)
is tiktok culture bad? if so why may i ask?
But how is pay?
I joined in 2020. The offer was similar to a mid-tier Google/Facebook offer. The difference is that my RSUs tripled in valuation. However, I don’t see there being as much growth, if one were to get an offer today in 2021. Unlike Google/Facebook which have quarterly vesting, TikTok RSUs vest yearly, at a 15/25/25/35 schedule. Because of this, I imagine many people leaving immediately after their 1-year mark.
count me as one. Got an offer ready to fly after couple of months.
I’ve been with the company for 2 years coming directly from a FAANG. I work long hours but I don’t mind since the work is very engaging. The majority of my team is also approaching their 2 years and no one on my team has left. It all depends on the team and your manager. I’m in eng in mtv and I don’t use LinkedIn. I asked during my interview if it’s 996 and they said no and that statement remains true.
What team are you on? I don’t mean to gaslight you, but often times when I see comments like these, I suspect it is HR, since they usually have a lot of positive sentiment but don’t provide examples of why it is positive. So if you don’t mind, could you perhaps share examples of what specifically is engaging and what you like in particular?
Crickets
Tiktok is the best place to work. Working there one year you will earn 1B usd soon.
I applied but there isn’t any interview opportunity
dm for referral?
So are you working there or not?
So I’m a bit confused. I did this - exactly as instructions. And then I checked about 30-40 profiles. Majority who “left” are interns. I did see 4-5 with engineer titles left after a year. I guess what surprised me is doing what OP said to do made me feel like it’s actually not so bad? How does it compared to the number of people who did stay?
So it looks like you are very determined. come on joining so I will have more friends for late late show coffee to chase deadlines.
Maybe my statistics are off then. Let’s say: - 33% of engineers leave after 1 yr - 33% of engineers leave 6 mo to 1 yr - 34% of engineers leave before 6 mo Is this a good thing? If you think it’s not bad, go ahead and apply. Maybe you’ll be a good fit if you can endure it!
ok sir. Will join
Welcome to hell.
I just joined🥵
