Hello- I was recently contacted by a recruiter about a UXR job with the Alexa group. It sounds interesting.... but I’m also wary because I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews about working at Amazon in general. Has anyone worked with this group before? What are they like? What is the comp generally for a UX Researcher vs Sr. UX Researcher role in the Seattle area?

Just left Alexa / Amazon as Sr. UXD, I hated it but my UXR counterparts seemed content. Wouldn’t use the word “happy” by any stretch. They seemed the least stressed out of all the roles I interacted with.

Does levels.fyi not have anything for researchers?

@human21 I was there a little under 6 mos. 2 UXDs quit my team in my first 45 days. Org changed names and this ownership 2-3 times. Collaboration is keyholed. I knew pretty early, just from the kind of haphazard onboarding it wasn’t going to be for me. I didn’t see any part of the org “living the values” but mentioning them constantly. It was weird. I definitely don’t regret leaving for a design driven company making material impact on employee culture. I know I’ve heard AWS is similar. When I asked my Mgr about loving to Music I was told they were also v political. I interviewed with a couple other teams but the work didn’t seem interesting. So it’s a toss up. I always find the “depends on the team” answers not helpful because it acknowledges that it’s kind of a roulette, could be said for other places, but highly prevalent in Amazon.

@kind dmsk day to day was reading and writing docs or documentation. Like 50-60%, and the rest divided between meetings, searching the wiki for context, and some actual designing if you could get to it.
