Now that H1B visa’s have a drop box option if you have a US visa issued after 2008 or something. Does anyone know how long it’ll take to get your passport back after you have dropped off the documents for stamping ?
I have my visa slot booked already and assumed my company would be fine with me working from India but I recently got to know that the policy has changed they aren’t allowing anyone to work overseas. I’ll have to take off for the entire visit. But the issue is PTOs are accured in my company and I would have just about 12 days of PTO that I would be able to use for my visit ! Is it a good idea to take the risk to visit India assuming I would get my passport within a week or two ? My drop box location is Delhi and pick up is in Bangalore

A friend of mine returned to the US last week. They took a month to return his passport after stamping. He had to reschedule his flight twice. He said some people are getting theirs back in a couple of days while others have to wait longer.

I think Chennai is taking the most amount of time to process. Delhi and Mumbai are relatively very fast at processing your application.

It is just unbelievable that they did absolutely nothing to ease this process through two years of the pandemic even on humanitarian grounds. They blame of backlogs due to pandemic and staff shortage, staff safety as reasons for this mess but won't do the simplest of common sense things to help ease some of the pain. For eg, what stops them from bringing a temporary rule to allow visa stamping in the US itself for those that have been here and working, say, for the last 2 or more years? Or just have the applicant upload all docs offline and have them verified to get an all clear (or a denial requiring in-person interview), so the processing time is very less when you actually submit your hard copies for stamping ? Why do you need to struggle so much to get an appointment and go out of the country to just hand over these documents in person ? But of course, none of this is a priority as it only impacts alien workers.
